Hintzpiration: Artistry at the Alumni Center to Showcase Simplism: Finding Creativity in Chaos
While you’re enjoying this year’s Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, be sure to take advantage of activities and amenities offered by the Penn State Alumni Association.
Visit the official Hintzpiration website for full details about the Alumni Association’s Arts Fest activities.
This year’s exhibit, “Simplism: Finding Creativity in Chaos,” features the vibrant work of designer and illustrator Brian Kappel ’98 A&A, whose career spans collaborations with major brands including Nike, Brand Jordan, Under Armour, adidas, and ESPN. Founder of Space Monkey Designs, Kappel is also the artist behind the mural at the Starbucks in Pattee Library at University Park. His bold, playful work transforms everyday chaos into creative expression across a variety of mediums. His connection to Penn State and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts also spans generations—his parents were Arts Festival vendors in the 1960s, and he grew up attending the festival.
On Friday, July 10, Kappel will offer a live art demonstration from 2–3:30 p.m., at the Hintz Family Alumni Center, giving visitors an inside look at his creative process.
Hintzpiration will also feature works from current Penn State student artists, along with a gallery of vintage Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts posters created by legendary graphic designer Lanny Sommese, Penn State distinguished professor emeritus, and his daughter, Saige Sommese, an accomplished graphic designer as well.
While exploring downtown Arts Fest, visitors can also stop by the Centre County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association Hospitality Tent located in front of the Municipal Building on South Allen Street. Guests can store art purchases for safekeeping while they continue exploring downtown (no overnight storage available), enjoy a complimentary water station, and purchase festival alumni T-shirts.
