SUMMARY:Molly Ryan Swingtet
DESCRIPTION:Since moving to New York City from California in 2003\, Molly Ryan has become one of the most sought-after vocalists on the New York jazz scene. She has performed at such prestigious Manhattan venues as the Café Carlyle\, The Town Hall\, The Waldorf Astoria\, Rainbow Room and Birdland. She brings her attractive\, elegant vocal style to songs originally recorded by singers such as Peggy Lee\, Helen Ward\, Martha Tilton\, and Helen Forrest.  \nThe Wall Street Journal music critic Will Friedwald said of her\, “Molly swings the melody – as well as the words – without affectation of any kind. She brings a straight-ahead innocence and total believability to the music that refuses to admit that sixty or seventy years of distractions have ever happened. She sounds worldly wise beyond her years\, wonderfully gentle and lyrical.” Indeed\, Molly’s silvery voice and lush\, elegant vocal style evoke the big band singers of the 1930s and breathe new life into familiar old standards. \nMolly has appeared at jazz festivals and events throughout the U.S. and abroad including North Carolina Jazz Festival\, New York Hot Jazz Festival\, and has headlined in Paris at jazz clubs such as the famed Le Petit Journal and Autour de Midi. \nThe Molly Ryan Swingtet performs again at 7:00 p.m. in Sidney Friedman Park.

SUMMARY:3 Dots Songwriter Showcase
DESCRIPTION:3 Dots\, a community center in downtown State College that promotes performing artists\, launched a Songwriter Showcase series in April with monthly shows featuring some of the most compelling and original writers in the region. From this pool\, four songwriters were selected to perform their songs at the Festival in a round-robin format\, in the spirit of the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. \nThe four performers are Jason Adams\, Travis McCoy\, Joe Pillot\, and Andy Tolins. \n  \n  \nJason Adams is a State College singer-songwriter who hosts and facilitates musical events and open mics to help grow and celebrate the community that has supported him. His writing is steeped in rock\, blues\, and folk styles with his own unique lyrical touch. He made a debut tour across the US to release his first album Reflections and Imperfections in 2019 as a Breedlove guitar artist. He has three soon-to-be-released songs recorded in Nashville and a book of lyrics and art moving toward publication. \n  \n  \n  \nTravis McCoy grew up in the small town of Lanse\, Pennsylvania. His musical influences include Hank Williams\, the Carter Family\, Bob Dylan\, and Neil Young. He is a relative newcomer to the State College music scene whose original\, sometimes offbeat songs have caught the attention of open-mic crowds and fellow songwriters. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nJoe Pillot was strongly influenced by the singer/songwriters of the 60s and 70’s. He was born in a small central Pennsylvania town and over the years has performed at arts festivals\, saloons\, wineries\, small auditoriums\, and the occasional county fair or local carnival. In his early years\, Pillot performed a few years as a vocalist and rhythm guitar player for Country Fever\, with legendary pedal steel player\, Gene Fye\, and bassist Jim Sherry. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAndy Tolins is a guitarist\, bassist and vocalist\, who also plays dobro\, mandolin and table steel. He is an accomplished songwriter\, bandleader\, and producer; winner of Billboard Magazine’s 1999 Best Unsigned Band award for “High Water” by the Triple A Blues Band. Andy has been performing full time in Central Pennsylvania and beyond for close to 30 years. His focus has been live American roots music\, fronting his own blues and bluegrass bands

SUMMARY:Jon Rounds Group with Special Guests Glenn Kidder and Randy Hughes
DESCRIPTION:Jon Rounds\, songwriter and acoustic guitarist. began his musical career in State College in the 1970s as the lead guitarist for the folk/country singer Bob Dear\, whose repertoire included songs by Guy Clark\, Gordon Lightfoot\, Jerry Jeff Walker\, and early Bob Dylan that would become part of the Americana canon long before the genre was named. Their music continues to influence Rounds’s own writing. \nHe went on to play and write songs for State College-based bands\, including the Rounds Brothers; Cartoon; Hughes\, Kidder& Rounds; and Mathieu\, Fox & Rounds. Cartoon played an annual reunion concert of original music at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts from 1984 through 2012. His last pre-Covid performance was with harmonica virtuoso Richard Sleigh at First Night 2019. He has played several songwriter-in-the-round shows at the Bluebird Café in Nashville\, and appeared on the Nashville-based webcast for songwriters\, The Weird Turn Pro\, on July 30\, 2020. \nHis songs have been performed and/or recorded by dozens of artists with ties to State College\, including Richard Sleigh\, Tommy Wareham\, Jen Hesketh\, Jameson Kidder\, Whetstone Run\, Morningsong\, Stacey Tibbets\, and Northwest Territory. \n\nJon will be joined by Bruce Truitt\, a multi-talented instrumentalist and singer from Austin\, Texas. Bruce has many years of experience in the music business as producer\, engineer\, designer\, instructor\, composer\, arranger\, and performer in many genres. He speaks and sings in Spanish\, Portuguese\, and Russian. \n  \n  \n  \n\n Jerry Bresee had been a solo performing songwriter for more decades than he’ll admit to\, with two released full-length collections on CD and streaming media to his credit. He held the guitar chair with the Loudoun Jazz Ensemble big band for 11 years and been a member of several jazz combos. He has performed on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage\, Twins Jazz Club on DC’s U Street jazz corridor\, and has been featured at Folk Alliance as a Martin Guitar showcase performer. He continues to perform with the DC-based String Theory Jazz Trio and Mad Dog Jazz Quintet. \n  \n  \n  \n\nGlenn Kidder performed in State College as a solo artist from 1977-1981\, and then as a singer/songwriter\, guitarist and percussionist with Cartoon and Hughes\, Kidder & Rounds. He then formed Glenn Kidder and Sidekicks in Virginia. Having lost the use of his vocal cords for singing\, Glenn will be playing percussion. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nBetween 1966 and 1990\, Randy Hughes played music around the State College area\, all over Pennsylvania\, and up and down the Eastern seaboard\, most notably with the bands Cartoon and MorningSong and often as a solo entertainer. It would be hard to prove\, but he thinks he may have played more CPFA shows than anyone. Randy moved to North Carolina in 1990 and retired three years ago as an English professor at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst\, NC. Still married to Cindy\, they just got a puppy named Toby. \n  \nThis performance is sponsored by Brown & Associates Inc. \nAn Arts Festival wristband is required for this performance. \nIn accordance with local ordinance\, masking may be required at this show.

SUMMARY:Paragon Ragtime Orchestra presents The Mark of Zorro
DESCRIPTION:The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra is the world’s only year-round\, professional ensemble re-creating “America’s Original Music” – the syncopated sounds of early musical theater\, silent cinema\, and vintage dance. Since its debut in 1988 at debut at Alice Tully Hall – the first concert ever presented at Lincoln Center by such an ensemble\, the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra has appeared at hundreds of leading arts venues. \nIn addition to its worldwide concert hall\, university\, and festival appearances\, the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra has acquired a considerable following both here and abroad through its radio programs on the New York Times’ WQXR\, National Public Radio\, the British Broadcasting Corporation\, and the Voice of America networks. Since 1989 the Walt Disney Company has relied on the Orchestra’s recordings for the outdoor theme music heard at Main Street\, U.S.A. at Disney Land\, Disney World\, and Euro Disney. \nOver the years the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra has been heard on the soundtracks of several motion pictures and television programs. The Orchestra’s audio and video recordings have been widely praised\, and considered instrumental in rekindling interest in America’s rich traditions of theater\, cinema\, and dance orchestra music. \nThe Mark of Zorro is a 1920 silent adventure romance film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery Sr. This genre-defining swashbuckler adventure was the first movie version of The Mark of Zorro and is based on the 1919 story The Curse of Capistrano by Johnston McCulley\, which introduced the masked hero\, Zorro. \nIn 2015\, the United States Library of Congress selected The Mark of Zorro for preservation in the National Film Registry\, finding it “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant”. \nThe film tells the story of Don Diego Vega\, the outwardly foppish son of a wealthy ranchero in early 19th century Spanish California. Seeing the mistreatment of the peons by rich landowners and the oppressive government\, Don Diego\, who is not as effete as he pretends\, has taken the identity of the masked Robin Hood-like rogue Señor Zorro (“Mr. Fox”)\, a champion of the people\, who appears out of nowhere to protect them from the corrupt administration of Governor Alvarado\, his henchman the villainous Captain Juan Ramon and the brutish Sergeant Pedro Gonzales. \nVisit their website to learn more.  \nAn Arts Festival wristband is required for this performance. \nIn accordance with local ordinance\, masking may be required at this show. \nRick Benjamin’s Paragon Ragtime Orchestra is a non-profit organization and is a New World Records performing Artist.

SUMMARY:Bill Carter and the Presbybop Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Presbybop Music is a musical venture of Bill Carter\, jazz pianist and Presbyterian minister. After years of pretending to split the life of faith from the music of jazz\, Bill has been trying to find links between the two halves of his brain. Presbybop is his attempt to integrate his faith with the rhythms of bebop. \nIn 1993 he formed the Presbybop Quartet with Al Hamme\, his college music professor from Binghamton University. With the core lineup of drummer Ron Vincent and bassist Tony Marino\, the band has evolved into a consort of musicians who have been turning heads on the musical scene. \nBased in northeastern Pennsylvania\, Bill’s ensemble has presented concerts and jazz worship services in churches and venues around the country.  The group has released ten albums. Their music has been widely acclaimed.
