Printmaking Demonstration with Artist Michael Reimer

July 9, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Gyotaku (pronounced GHEE-OH-TAH-KOO) is the art and technique of Japanese fish printing. Gyo means ‘Fish’ and Taku means ‘Rubbing’ or ‘Impression’. The earliest known gyotaku were made in the 1860’s to preserve a true record of the size and species of fish caught by Japanese anglers. It later evolved into an art form.

Michael Reimer (seen here with fishing legend Joe Humphries) is a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. He does most of his fishing in Montgomery County, Chester County, and Berks County, Pennsylvania. The only prints that he mats or frames are those he’d keep as my own. Since he catches the fish (or in some cases, was with a friend who caught a fish), he has a connection to each print.
