Essence of Joy Alumni Singers

July 12, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Since its first performance at the Festival in 2006, the “Essence” performance has come to be a highlight of the Festival. Founded by former Penn State Laureate, Dr. Anthony T. Leach, Essence of Joy, and its progeny, the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers, and Essence II, Ltd., perform sacred and secular music from the African and African-American tradition. This year, the Festival is delighted to present the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers.

The choir has performed extensively at festivals and schools, and in churches, concert halls. They’ve sung, not just in Pennsylvania, but also in Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, New York, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington D.C., Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. The choir released its first CD, Joy, in July 2011.

While Dr. Leach retired from Penn State in 2018, he still serves as conductor of the Essence of Joy Alumni Singers and Essence II, Ltd. He is also director of music at Monumental AME, Steelton, PA. He also serves as chair for Lifelong Music for the Eastern Division of the American Choral Directors Association.

The Essence of Joy Alumni Singers is an official Alumni Interest Group of the Penn State Alumni Association.
