The Festival lost two important friends recently, Wally Lloyd and Sharon McCarthy.
Wallis Lloyd
Wallis Lloyd, one of the founders of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, died in January 2012. He was a chemical engineer who moved to State College with his wife Pat in 1956, where he taught at Penn State and was involved in the Atoms for Peace Program. In 1963, he joined Cannon Instrument Company, eventually becoming its Vice President. He also was involved in many community activities, such as serving as the President of the State College Chamber of Commerce. It was in that capacity that he contacted the Dean of Penn State’s College of Arts and Architecture, beginning the town/gown venture that is the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. The CPFA was opened by Pennsylvania Governor Raymond Shafer on July 22, 1967. In 1992, Wallis Lloyd received the Borough Legacy Award for outstanding contributions to the quality of community life.

Sharon McCarthy
Sharon McCarthy, a long time volunteer and Board Member of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts died in February 2012, after a long bout with ovarian cancer. A native of Lancaster County, Sharon lead a rich and eventful life that took her to live on the west coast and then back to the east coast before returning to her beloved Pennsylvania. She was a Democratic Party activist, a successful merchant, an artist, and a lifelong community volunteer. Shortly after Sharon and her husband John moved to State College in the late 1990s, she became involved with the Arts Festival. She chaired the Images Exhibition Committee, and served on the Festival’s Board of Directors. Sharon was instrumental in the continuing success of the Festival’s Silent Auction and she her husband John have sponsored an Award of Merit in the Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition.
We salute Wally and Sharon’s hard work and generous spirits. In more ways than we can count, each of them made our community a better place to live.
