42nd Banner Exhibition and Competition

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts announced the award winners in its 2007 Banner Competition today.

In the professional class, first place was won by Marty Edmunds of Boalsburg for her appliqué banner, The Festival Jester Blooms in July. The top prize in the professional class is $250.00. The award in the professional class is sponsored by Walk’s Service Center of State College.

In the youth division, first place went to the Park Forest Middle School Art Club for its banner. The top prize in the youth category is $100.00. Second prize went to Anna Pearl Belinda of State College.

This year’s banner judges were Ruth Kempner and Jill Lillie.

Before moving to central Pennsylvania, Ruth Kempner worked as a fabric designer in the fashion industry in New York City. She currently teaches a variety of subjects at The Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania. .

Lillie is the Director of Marketing for The Village at Penn State Retirement Community. Over the last twenty years she has held a number of different volunteer positions for The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts including ranging from Sidewalk Sale Ambassador to Food Taster.

Each year, the Arts Festival hangs over one hundred banners over the Festival route. Since each of these banners was once an entry in our Banner Competition.

Our 2008 Banner jurors are Ruth Kempner and Jill Lillie

A native New Yorker, Ruth Kempner earned a fine arts degree at the Cooper Union and continued her studies at New York University, Yale University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Before moving to central Pennsylvania, she worked as a fabric designer in the fashion industry in New York City. She currently teaches a variety of subjects at The Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania.

Jill Lillie is the Director of Community Relations at The Village at Penn State, a life care retirement community in State College. A State College native and Penn State alumna, Jill has volunteered with the Festival for many years, most recently as children’s art and craft workshop leader at First Night State College.

The jurors will award prizes on the basis of creativity, originality, craftsmanship, durability, and design.
